There are approximately 3.5 to 4 million people in the United States who suffer with various forms of lymphedema. There are two basic categories: primary lymphedema and secondary lymphedema. There are 3 subcategories of primary lymphedema: congenital (Nonné-Milroy’s syndrome), which may present at birth to 1 year of age; lymphedema praecox (Meige disease), which affects children and young adults at the rate of approximately 1 in 100,000 girls and 1 in 400,000 boys and which generally manifests around puberty; and lymphedema tarda, which presents usually after age 35.
Treatment for breast cancer via axillary dissection and radiation treatment accounts for the majority of reported cases of secondary lymphedema in the United States. Morbid obesity also rates as a leading cause of lymphedema in this country. |

Lymphedema is one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed of all diseases. Many physicians are not sure how to diagnose it, treat it or know where to send the patients for treatment. Treatment of lymphedema requires the services of a competent and well-trained therapist, physician or other healthcare professional specializing in Lymphology and/or the treatment of diseases of the lymphatic system. The Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) outlines suggested criteria for defining high level of competency in therapeutic treatment of lymphedema and recommends a minimum of 135 hours of additional skilled training by an approved educational provider. LANA certification, however, is optional and not a requirement for treatment of lymphedema.
